Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Alicia Keys and many other high-profile celebs are teaming with the U.S. government to launch Let Girls Learn, an initiative focused on providing quality education to young women around the globe.

Released today, the star-studded PSA brings to light atrocities against girls in various parts of the world. The video was organized by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which is also providing $231.6 million for educational programs in Nigeria, Afghanistan, South Sudan, Jordan and Guatemala.

USAID invests an annual average of $1 billion to help ensure that girls and boys in low-income countries get an equal education in a safe environment.

“In Nigeria, hundreds of young girls were kidnapped as they prepared for their final exams at boarding school,” Garner says in the video. Adds Scandal creator Shonda Rhimes, encouraging viewers to do their part: “Make the courage of so many girls around the world count.”

Jun 17, 2014 · · Articles · Comments Off on The Secret to Jennifer Garner’s Perfect Skin at 42

Our latest celebrity skin care crush? Jennifer Garner. She’s 42, and her skin is pretty much flawless. We chatted with the actress and Neutrogena ambassador about how she keeps her glowy youthfulness.

How important is skin care to you?
I keep my skin clean, SPF’d, and I make sure to clean and moisturize at night. That’s often as much time as I have. But I love being in the sun. I feel so lucky to live in Southern California and to wake up to a beautiful, sunny day almost every single day. As far as sun protection goes, it has to be a part of your daily routine, just like brushing your teeth. As a matter of a fact, I do it right after I brush my teeth—the sunscreen immediately goes on. Even if I’m taking my kids to school and know that I’m coming home and will work out and shower later, I don’t care. I will do it twice! I just never leave without it.

What is your favorite sunscreen?
I love Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch because you can wear it under makeup, and it doesn’t leave you feeling greasy and gross! The important thing to me is to have every possible kind of sunscreen available because you need different things at different times. I love Neutrogena Beach Defense, and I have the Wet Skin sunscreen around when we’re playing outside in the sprinklers. I love to spray sunscreen on my face and body when I need to get it done quickly. My kids often prefer the face and body sticks, and I use Pure and Free Baby on them all the time. I have sunscreen everywhere! I never go anywhere without it.

Any application tips? Do you have a special way of applying it?
You just have to be thorough. If you miss a spot, maybe you are missing that spot consistently and putting yourself at risk for skin cancer later. So my only application tip is be liberal.

When I was a little girl I used to hate being forced to wear sunscreen. How do your daughters feel about it?
All kids hate to have sunscreen put on them. One hundred percent of kids! I’ve never met one who was just dying to have sunscreen put on her face. I think you have to let them choose the form—if they want a face and body stick or a spray or the lotion. We do everything from, “I will get it on before we are finished singing the ABC’s” to “You can count to 10 and by the time you count to 10 you’re done.” Now that my kids are getting older, I’m starting to let them apply it themselves, but the key is that they have to do it every day. There can’t be a day where if they’re grumpy enough about it, I say, “OK, forget it.” It’s just part of the daily routine.

What is your favorite summer getaway destination?
The one vacation that I take with my family every year without fail is to my home state of West Virginia, and it gets hot there in the summer. So we definitely spend a lot of time with the sprinklers in the lawn at my parents’ house.

What are your beach-day essentials?
My beach essentials would definitely be a spray sunscreen because it can help repel that gritty, gross feeling from the sand, a good pair of sunglasses, flip-flops, and a bucket and shovel!

What is the makeup product you can’t live without?
You cannot go wrong with the Neutrogena MoistureSmooth Color Sticks. They really do add moisture and are the perfect amount of color saturation and sheer. Rich Raisin and Juicy Peach are great ones. I am wearing Bright Berry today.

Jun 10, 2014 · · Articles · Comments Off on Jennifer Garner Thinks She’s a Beauty Disaster, Plus the Cute Way She Gets Her Kids to Wear Sunscreen

There was a time (not too long ago) when baby oil was more of a beach staple than sunscreen. Jennifer Garner knows what I’m talking about: “My whole generation—I think we were all just tossed out into the sun to burn to a crisp,” she told me on the phone. “I was deep brown all summer, every summer. Now I realize I’m really fair, and I never had any business being that tan.” While the low-key actress may not insist on wearing makeup every day, SPF is non-negotiable—for her or her family. Read on to find out how she gets her kids to slather the stuff on, and why she thinks she’s a beauty disaster. (We’re going to go ahead and disagree with her on that one.)

How do you get your kids to wear sunscreen?
“It’s such a battle. But everyone has to do it every day. You have to make it part of the routine so that they stop fighting. I let them decide: Do they want a face and body stick on their face and arms before school, or do they want a lotion? I let them choose a song, and by the end of singing it, I have to be done putting it on them. You make a game out of how fast you can do it—but it has to happen. It can be a game or it can be a battle, but it’s going on one way or the other.”

What about your husband [Ben Affleck]? I read about a study recently that said men are more at risk for melanoma because they’re less likely to wear sunscreen.
“50 percent of men say they have not worn sunscreen in the past year. I cannot tell you how many battles with him I’ve had about sunscreen when we’re at the beach and I see him crisping up. He knows how I feel about it; he knows what I do for a living [Garner is a spokeswoman for Neutrogena]. If I can sneak it in, I spray it on him.”

What’s your go-to sunscreen?
“Neutrogena Ultra Sheer, because it doesn’t mess with your makeup if you have to wear any and it doesn’t aggravate your skin. SPF 30 in the winter, but now it’s almost always 45. If I’m going to be out in the sun, it’s probably up to 70.”

When you’re at the beach, do you wear makeup?
“No. I almost never wear makeup unless someone is putting it on me for work. I do usually use a little concealer around my nose or under my eyes, but that’s as far as I go. I used to wear mascara every day, and I don’t know why, but it feels fake or something. I’ve just grown out of it.”

So I guess it’s fair to say you aren’t exactly a beauty junkie?
“I’m not someone who should be in a beauty spotlight. I was one of those people who wore pajamas to class every day in college, and I would still be that way if I could! I’m in New Balance sneakers every day. I try not to be because I get made fun of by my husband and friends, but it’s not natural for me to think about how I look on a daily basis. So I’m kind of my own walking beauty disaster.

That’s pretty hard to believe when we see pictures of you on the red carpet.
“I have grown to love nice clothes and looking nice. I’ve been exposed to such a level of fashion and design that I have no right to wear, and I have to say, I’ve grown to reeeeaalllly like them. When it comes to red carpet, I’m all in.”

Jennifer Garner will host the 5th Annual Thirst Gala, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

The gala, which will take place on June 24 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, aims to connect attendees with people served by the non-profit group The Thirst Project.

During the gala, talent producer Krissy Lindquist will receive the Volunteer Award; actress Bella Thorne will receive the pioneering Spirit Award; and education company Follett will receive the Vision Award, for making education easily accessible.

The Thirst Project is teaming with Relativity for a campaign tied to the studio’s family film Echo to Earth, which centers on a group of friends who receive a distress signal on their phones from an alien in need of help.

The joint campaign tied to the film encourages people to text the word ECHO to 51555, followed by a message of encouragement to someone without safe, clean drinking water. Relativity’s Earth to Echo will donate money to build wells, and messages from the texts will be installed on murals on the wells.

The Thirst Project is a youth water activism organization that builds freshwater wells in developing nations and impoverished communities. According to the group, Nearly 1 billion people do not have access to clean water.

May 30, 2014 · · Articles · Comments Off on Jennifer Garner’s 6-Step Plan to Flawless Summer Skin

The ushering-in of summer days with barbecues! and beaches! and bathing suits! is finally upon us all!! And with the sizzling season comes the perhaps less fun but equally important topic of sun protection. When considering women with glowing complexions, we couldn’t think of a paragon more perfect than the radiant Jennifer Garner. So we hit her up to get some real talk on the importance of sunscreen and taking care of your face.

“I think there’s this haze of denial when we’re in our 20s and early-30s where we think, ‘Well, I don’t see any sun damage on my face so I must not be someone who gets dark spots.’ The reality is that it all shows up the day you turn 35. You start to have spots and you think: Why? That’s when you realize all those younger years of overdoing it have caught up to you,” she tells “So if you can just get in your brain to wear sunscreen now, I promise you will thank me later. You will see little old lady Jennifer walking down the street in 10 years and be like, ‘Wow, that really saved my skin!’ You really should have started wearing it yesterday, so make it as much a part of your day as brushing your teeth, and don’t look back. It’s the most magical thing: It just stops aging.” Here, the Neutrogena spokesperson gives us her six-step plan to achieving a complexion that beams so bright it could even rival the sun’s!

1. Wake up and work out!

“I like to work out early in the morning because I think it really does improve your skin if you just get moving first thing. I wake up at 5:30 A.M. I’ve worked out with Valerie Waters for 14 years now. She’s my ‘sunrise sister,’ and every day she comes to my house. We have a coffee while we work out, which is so not what you’re supposed to do, but whatever. It works for us! We watch the sunrise while we do a little bit of cardio like running on a treadmill or spinning on a bike. We do big weight-training circuits and whatever else she comes up with. I just do whatever she says.”

2. Take a shower and wash your face.

“If I’m lucky and I want to feel beautiful, I get a shower in after my workout. That doesn’t happen every day, but I believe in it. I use your basic Neutrogena face bar. I’ve used it forever. I’ve literally used it since I was 12. I like the smell: It’s clean and fresh. I feel like it’s part of what I smell like now, and my kids wouldn’t recognize me if I didn’t use it.”

3. Apply sunscreen.

“Immediately after, no negotiations, I have to apply my sunscreen. I use the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer. In the winter I use SPF 30, but now that it’s heating up I might use SPF 45, or if I’m gong to be outside, SPF 50. I like that it doesn’t make you look greasy and you can have it everywhere. I don’t think that sunscreen should be something that you get from the department store. You need to use it liberally and you shouldn’t have to feel worried about overusing your sunscreen. You need to have it everywhere, and you need to use it all the time.”

4. Conceal problem spots.

“Next, I usually use a little bit of concealer, because I feel like if your skin looks even, then really nothing else [is needed]. I’ll apply it around the nose, under the eyes, and wherever I have a spot. Neutrogena [used to make] these little pots, and I swear it’s not because I work for them, but they’re the perfect consistency. They have the perfect amount of pigment in them, and I’ve turned all my makeup artists onto them.”

5. (Matte) bronze a little.

“I also love a bronzer or blush, but I just don’t get to it everyday. I can’t say it’s something that I use all that often, but I like anything that just has a natural color to it. I’m probably past the shimmery bronzer phase of life. A makeup artist used an expensive matte one on me and he accidentally left it at my house, wink wink, if you know what I mean….”

6. Don’t forget the moisturizer!

“Then at night, I wash, use eye cream, and moisturize, and that’s it. I can’t say that I have a total favorite moisturizer, but I like one that has alpha hydroxy acids and all kinds of good stuff in it, because I know I’m just not going to use a little serum for this and a vitamin-whatever for that. I like the good stuff to all be in one product. So I can be kind of a slut in that way: I don’t really care what my moisturizer is!”
