Plus, she reveals how being a mom has affected her commitment to the charity at the event, which also honored Tony Blair and was attended by Dakota Fanning and Trisha Yearwood, among others

Wednesday night’s Save the Children Illumination Gala at the Plaza Hotel was all about family.

The second-annual event, which helps support Save the Children’s objectives to work to eliminate preventable childhood deaths worldwide and ensure every U.S. child has access to high-quality early childhood education, was hosted by Jennifer Garner, who was honored at last year’s gala and brought her daughter, Violet, to that event.

This year, her husband, Ben Affleck, was honored along with others who’ve done exemplary work to help children around the world.

On the red carpet, Garner told The Hollywood Reporter that having kids has strengthened her commitment to the charity — which serves impoverished, marginalized children around the world – and helped her relate to the women and caretakers she visits.

Nov 20, 2014 · · Articles · Comments Off on Jennifer Garner: Why I Wanted My Girls to Take Karate

Sydney Bristow would be proud: Jennifer Garner‘s girls are learning to master martial arts.

The actress, 42, wants her daughters to embrace their “femininity” by playing with baby dolls and knowing how to bake.

However, she also wants Violet, 9 next month, and Seraphina, 5½, “to be able to kick a guy’s ass,” she told reporters on the red carpet at the 2nd annual Save the Children Illumination Gala.

“That’s why they’ve been taking karate since they were little!”

But book smarts are equally important to Garner. “I want my girls to love math and I want them to think that being a scientist is the coolest job on the planet,” she said at the event, which honored her husband, Ben Affleck.

According to the actor, Garner, who is on the board of trustees of Save the Children and who hosted the gala, is a great role model for their daughters.

“I think they understand what my wife understands full well, which is that it’s important to be strong and present and powerful and accept nothing less than a man would and in fact, ask for more,” Affleck, 42, says.

“That’s part of what I admire about my wife and I know through her example that my children will absorb that.”

While her children — including son Samuel, 2½ – wish she could stay home with them all the time, Garner says, “I want my kids to know that if working is important to me, and working for Save the Children is important to me, then that’s valid and that as much as I love them, I’m my own person too.”

Nov 14, 2014 · · Articles · Comments Off on This Is How Jessica Alba, Jennifer Garner Plan to Give Back This Holiday

The holidays arrived early on Wednesday night in Culver City, as The BookBindery was adorned with a string of festive lights, decorative holly plants and wooden Christmas trees (with wrapped gifts tucked underneath, of course) to celebrate Toms founder Blake Mycoskie’s new holiday collection with Target.

Ever since he founded Toms shoes in 2006 and continuing as he has grown his business to include sunglasses and coffee, the chief shoe giver has wanted to expand his reach of the one-for-one giving model (for every item purchased, a donation is made) and Target allowed him to do so. “It’s an amazing opportunity to help so many more people during the holiday season and really important, helping people in the United States and Canada,” Mycoskie told Pret-a-Reporter, adding that his latest collab will provide 11 million meals, blankets and shoes to those in need during the holidays.

Jennifer Garner, who attended the evening’s festivities, looks forward to paying it forward this year through the Toms x Target collection. “There’s so many different places for giving back. We need to look at giving back in a global sense and people in our own backyard and this is a great way to give back,” said the Men, Women & Children actress, referring to the charitable collection. “You buy something at Target that you actually want and Toms takes care of the giving for you, so you can feel good about it.”

Attendee Jessica Alba shared that sentiment: “I just love how tangible the giving is. You get a bag and you know it’s going to provide a certain number of warm meals to someone in need or you get a poncho and you know it’s going to provide a blanket.”

During the soiree, guests were invited to shop the limited-edition line, including women’s cozy knit sweaters ($32) and comfy ponchos ($28), men’s casual shirts ($30) and Toms ceramic cups ($15). Soon you, too, can shop for the cause when the range drops at all Target stores in the U.S. and Canada and Target.com starting Nov. 16. Happy holidays.

Nov 12, 2014 · · Articles, Charity · Comments Off on InStyle’s Shining Stars: Behind the Scenes with Jennifer Garner and Save the Children

Concern for the well-being of others doesn’t start and end with the holidays, of course. For the “Shining Stars” story in the December issue of InStyle, we caught up with six famous faces who are shedding light on the spirit of giving throughout the year.

Jennifer Garner may be an award-winning actress, mother-of-three, and wife to Ben Affleck, but the multi-tasker stills finds it in herself to offer time and energy to a cause that hits close to home: Save the Children, the leading independent charity for youngsters in need that advocates children’s rights in more than 120 countries (including the United States) by providing medical aid, food, water, and educational tools.

“Nearly one in four children in rural America is growing up in poverty,” Garner tells Katherine Schwarzenegger in InStyle’s December issue. “My own mother was raised in Oklahoma with 11 kids squeezed into one tiny space. She is the only member of her family who went to college, and the reason she was able to accomplish so much is because her brain was prepared for school at an early age. It’s crucial to intervene while children are young. We’ve already lost them if they aren’t starting school until the age of 5 or 6.”

“In an ideal world, we could just take the billions of dollars we spend on the juvenile court system and invest it in the first five years of life. Every time I visit a family in their home with Save the Children, we help foster the connection between mothers and their kids. When we show mothers hot to stimulate their child’s brain, it’s like watching a lightbulb go on,” Garner says. “It thrills me, because I know a child’s life is going to be better and that mother is going to enjoy parenthood so much more.”

Plus, watch Jennifer Garner’s video above to learn more about how she got involved in the cause, and pick up the December issue of InStyle for the full Shining Stars feature, on newsstands and available for digital download Nov. 14.
